A Couple of thoughts concerning Global Warming...

I really don't want to waste a whole lot of my time or energy discussing this subject, but it's Saturday....and other than researching a couple Civil War battles I figured what the heck!

Earlier this week I ran across some interesting "snipits" of information regarding global warming that I wanted to pass along. First of all let me say that in my opinion, this is one of the biggest non-issues I've ever come across. In the past, if an issue didn't hold water when exposed to scientific reality it was called "a non-starter." That's my opinion of global warming. Mountains from mole-hills folks! Now that doesn't mean that I don't believe that we should take better care of Mother Earth - I do. I just don't think that we, or I, or all of the rest of you need to go around mourning the fact that there are cars on the road, and more houses being built. Within reason, I think we can all be better "custodians" of the planet without driving a car that runs on recycled banana peels and llama spit! But that's just me.

Before we get started, let me turn you all onto a wonderful website. It's the website of the author Michael Crichton who has written so many great books, and makes a lot of sense on many issues - including this one. Click on this link: http://www.michaelcrichton.net/ Once you're there, go to the top right side of the first page where there's a list of options. Click on "Speeches." Read up from the bottom but pay special attention to "Aliens Cause Global Warming," "Our Environmental Future," and "Testimony before the United States Senate."

OK? Here are some of the things that struck me this past week concerning global warming, and how I feel about them. You can, (as easily as I did), look up everything I'm about to tell you by doing a Goggle search of each item. For every one you'll get loads of "hits" to read through. (Ain't "click knowledge" great?) The hard part for you will be setting aside the "crap" that's been shoveled down your throat since the time you were in high school, and come to your own conclusions. (Perish the thought that your own logic & intuition might tell you you've been sold a bill of goods for the last 20 years!)
  • This was said during the 1st Earth Day back in 1970: "If present trends continue, the world will be 4 degrees colder in 1990, but 11 degrees colder by the year 2000. This is about twice what it would take to put us in an ice age!"- U.C. Professor Kenneth Watt. Science Digest followed up in an article by saying, "We MUST prepare for the next ice age!" (First it was a "coming ice age," then we were told "the population boom" would kill off millions of us, now it's "global warming." How many different ways do you want to argue the problem of humans killing the planet?)
  • The news media reports that there are glaciers melting around the world! (What they don't tell you is that there are an equal number of glaciers around the world that are growing!)
  • A Gallup poll found that only 17 percent of the members of the Meteorological Society and the American Geophysical Society think that the warming of the 20th century has been a result of greenhouse gas emissions - principally CO2 from burning fossil fuels. (How come we never hear about this from the media folks? Because this is the real inconvenient truth!) In addition, more than 100 noted scientists, including the former president of the National Academy of Sciences, signed a letter declaring that costly actions to reduce greenhouse gases are not justified by the best available evidence.
  • Here's one I especially like, that greenhouse gas, carbon Dioxide that everyone is so scared silly about....makes up less than 3% of the atmosphere! (Yup, we're going to change our entire ways of life for less than 3% of the atmosphere).
  • Scientists Agree the Earth Is Warming?? While ground-level temperature measurements suggest the earth has warmed between 0.3 and 0.6 degrees Celsius since 1850, global satellite data, the most reliable of climate measurements, show no evidence of warming during the past 18 years. Even if the earth's temperature has increased slightly, the increase is well within the natural range of known temperature variation over the last 15,000 years. Indeed, the earth experienced greater warming between the 10th and 15th centuries - a time when vineyards thrived in England and Vikings colonized Greenland and built settlements in Canada. (See? And this is well within the natural range of how the earth works. Mama earth goes through cycles of heating and cooling - irrespective of human involvement. It's NOT the CO2 that's causing the warming of the planet, it's the Sun. Bet nobody ever told you that did they? Don't believe me, look it up!)
  • nomenclature change - recently eco-enviro proponents have been using the term "abrupt climate change" interchangeably with global warming. Isn't that funny? Global warming carries an inference of getting warmer...while "abrupt climate change" allows for eco/enviro's to condemn mankind for either warming OR cooling the planet. (Hmmm... remember the '70 Earth Day predictions! Here we go again! Both ways now!)
Interesting aren't they?

Don't misunderstand me, I am 100% in agreement in finding more efficient ways to power our vehicles and heat/cool our homes. For example, I can't believe that the same brains that designed and developed the automobile, haven't found a better carburetion system in the last 100 years, or a grossly more efficient engine! (Personally I believe there are working prototypes sitting on the shelves at Ford, Chrysler & Toyota. And none of them are going to give up the golden goose without a fight). I also think that all of us can do a better job individually to fight pollution and protect the environment. Volunteer to clean up a stretch of a local stream, or walk a local road picking up garbage.

I just don't believe half of the "eco-hype" we get bombarded by every single day of our lives. Nor do I believe that either any one "thing" or any one solution will ultimately solve the problem. I do know that there were two words you never heard discussed during a recent Oscar winning movie - "nuclear power." Safe, effective, inexpensive and continuously reliable, it's been working for over 50 years! Most of all - I don't view either political party (but especially the Democrat Party) as being the Messiah of Environmentalism. But that's another posting.

Hope you enjoyed this one. Leave a comment below.
